Description
The railway goods shed, built in 1848 for the Great Eastern and Midland Railway Companies, is constructed of stock brick and features a corrugated asbestos sheet roof with coped gable ends and corbelled brick kneelers. The building has a rectangular plan with two parallel integral ranges and openings at the north and south ends as well as the east side. It is a single storey structure with a symmetrical five-bay east front that includes three large double recessed segmentally arched entrances, flanked by two narrower round arch blind bays that project slightly forward. A broad brick pilaster is located on the right side. At the south end, there are two double recessed round arch windows with a cast iron frame at the center and a large segmental arch entrance to the right; the left side is partially obscured by a later 19th-century lean-to from the west range. The shed was jointly used by the Great Eastern and Midland Railway Companies until 1872, when the Great Eastern took sole control, and it remained in railway use until the 1950s. The interior has not been inspected.
