Description

The Lido is an open-air swimming facility located on Bishop's Road in Peterborough, designed in 1936 by a committee of honorary architects. The building features painted and rendered brick with hipped green pantile roofs and surrounds three sides of the swimming pools, which include a large 50-yard Main Pool, a Learner Pool, and a Paddling Pool.

The main range on the west side has a central two-storey gateway and grandstand, with three round-headed entrances featuring fanlights, flanked by six-light metal casement windows. Above this area is a tall square clock tower topped with a pyramidal copper roof. To either side of the main structure are single-storey wings with continuous metal-framed window strips, which are capped with square piers and iron fencing. At each end, there are square two-storey pavilions, each with three-light metal casement windows on both outer facades.

The inner facades of the building are connected by a continuous open loggia that runs around three sides of the pools. The central grandstand includes a snack bar on the ground floor, with two long staircases leading to the upper floor, which also features an open loggia supported by square columns. The Main Pool is equipped with diving boards and various short and tall octagonal lights. The Lido was constructed by Peterborough City Council and officially opened by the Mayor, Councillor A H Mellows, on May 25th, 1936.
