Description

Warrender Public Baths, located on Thirlestane Road in Edinburgh, was designed by Robert Paterson and Son and built between 1886 and 1887. This single-storey and basement swimming facility features a rectangular plan and showcases an eclectic Jacobean style. The building includes a variety of straight and crowstepped gables, as well as finialled bays. It has prominent transomed and mullioned round-arched windows, which are architraved, and a stone balustrade above the eaves. The entrance elevation is made of pink sandstone ashlar, while the rear is constructed from snecked sandstone. Some windows have scrolled pediments, and the rear features bracketed gables, a large round-arched window, a tall ventilation block, and a courtyard area.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with various glazing patterns, and there are later 20th-century glass doors at the main entrance. The roofs are pitched and covered with grey slates, and there is a coped chimneystack.

Inside, as seen in 2013, there is a mosaic-tiled foyer with a barrel-vaulted coffered ceiling that leads to a short flight of stairs down to the pool area. The pool area is highlighted by a wide timber king-post and a glazed roof, along with timber arcading that contains changing cubicles. A red sandstone framed Vitruvian arch marks the end of the pool area, leading to the gymnasium.

The property is also marked by a low coped boundary wall with square-plan entrance piers that feature carved caps and cast-iron lamp standard finials. There are plain gatepiers and a coped boundary wall at the rear that fronts the courtyard.
