Description
The Woman with a Fish statue is a Grade II listed sculpture located in Delapre Gardens, Northampton. Created in 1951 by sculptor Frank Dobson, the statue is made of concrete and stands 5 feet 7 inches tall. It depicts a seated woman holding a fish, which originally had water flowing from its mouth. The female nude is a recurring theme in Dobson's work, reflecting influences from neo-classicism, particularly the style of Maillol, as well as elements of primitive sculpture from the East. This piece is considered Dobson's most successful public work and one of his finest late creations. It was first shown at the second Battersea Park Sculpture Exhibition in 1951 before being relocated to Northampton, where it was installed in the gardens in 1978.
