Description

This is an 18th-century stable block located within the grounds of Delapre Abbey. The building is two storeys high and constructed of dressed ironstone. A string course runs below the first-floor windows, and a frieze and cornice extend to a parapet. The roof is slate, with lead ridges. A prominent hipped cupola sits centrally, topped with a clock beneath a segmental pediment. The cupola features engaged columns supporting an entablature that projects over the columns. Rectangular openings lead to the bell chamber, and the dome is crowned with a ball finial and a tall, scroll-pattern weather vane.

The central section of the stable block has three wide bays. The central bay features a large arched opening in a rusticated surround with a key block, now filled with a modern window, and a semicircular three-light window above. The flanking bays have four-pane sash windows; those on the ground floor are within rusticated surrounds, while the upper windows are recessed. Lower wings flank the central block, each also containing three bays.

Delapre Abbey, along with its stable block, billiard room, garden wall, gateway, game larder, coach house, and park house, forms a group of buildings.
