Description
The Transit Shed 25, located on Camperdown Street at Victoria Dock in Dundee Harbour, was designed by Charles Ower and constructed between 1864 and 1865, with an extension to the east around 1880 to 1890. This single-storey building is primarily brick and timber-clad and is situated on the west side of Camperdown Dock.
On the east elevation facing the dock, there is a 13-bay cast iron pilastrade featuring lion rainwater heads and a malleable iron girder lintel above timber sliding doors that run the entire length of the wall. The west elevation is constructed of brick, accented with an ashlar eaves course and rusticated quoins and door-surrounds, also featuring timber sliding doors supported by malleable iron or steel lintels.
The south elevation is similarly brick-built with rusticated quoins and includes two gables. The eastern gable, built in 1865, has a prominent off-centre sliding door, while the western gable features a central sliding door and a wide segmental arched window above it. The north elevation mirrors the south elevation with a gable to the west, while the eastern gable is boarded up where the link to the sheds on the north side of the dock and the passage for the railway have been removed.
The shed has a slate M-roof, although the roof over the eastern section has been altered to corrugated sheeting. Inside, the space is divided into two spacious aisles by cast iron columns and malleable iron or steel girders. The eastern section features a wrought-iron polonceau truss with cast-iron struts, while the western section includes wrought-iron or steel tension rods and angle-irons.
