Description

The Harbour Warehouse, located on Camperdown Street at Victoria Dock in Dundee Harbour, was designed by David Cunningham in 1877. This impressive five-storey building, with an attic, features a five-bay ashlar fireproof granary and bonded warehouse, complete with a six-stage clock tower.

On the north and south elevations, the ground floor is blind, featuring a central arched entrance with a keystone and cornice. There are string courses on the upper floors, with the first, third, and fifth bays designed as tripartite sections, while the fourth bay has keystoned arched recesses. The second and fourth hoist bays have wide elliptical arches, although the door openings are now blocked with brick and have cast-iron lintels. The building has impost-level string courses, a main cornice, and a parapet.

The west elevation is adjacent to a transit shed at the ground floor. The upper floors are blind and feature continuous string courses and a main cornice. A central projecting square-section hoist tower has a single light on each face of the fifth stage, with a large clock face set within an arched opening at the sixth stage, accompanied by an impost-level string course on each elevation. The top cornice is adorned with a pierced parapet, angle dies, and ball finials.

The east elevation is constructed of snecked rubble and has three band courses at the floor levels. It includes a gabled sheet metal-clad elevator and small timber-clad lean-to buildings at the base of the elevator.

The slate roof is topped with tall gable skews, and the windows are primarily boarded rather than glazed.

Inside, the warehouse is fireproof, featuring cast-iron columns and bowed Hodgekinson beams, along with brick arches and wrought-iron ties. The columns on the second, third, and fourth floors are flanged at their bases to accommodate loose grain dividing boards. The fifth mezzanine floor is a timber structure supported by wrought-iron beams within the roof space, which includes angle-iron principals and struts. A stairway at the southeast corner has a large rectangular well.
