Description
The entrance archway to Randall's Nursery, located at 136 High Street in Newton-le-Willows, is a Grade II* listed structure, originally part of Haydock Lodge and likely built in the very early 19th century. This stone archway features a slate roof and a round-arched entrance adorned with a Doric aedicule. The arch includes imposts and an archivolt with a decorative scrolly key. Above the entrance, there is a pediment decorated with leg arms and an acroterion shaped like a ram's head crest.
Flanking the archway are wings that consist of five bays. The four-bay Doric colonnade is attached and features a frieze with roundels, a cornice, and a blocking course. The left wing has lunettes, while the right wing contains round-headed windows with sashes that do not have glazing bars. The end bays of the wings are highlighted by rusticated quoins and recesses that feature straight-headed windows.
