Description
The Newton Viaduct, located to the west of the station in Newton-le-Willows, was built in 1828 for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, designed by George Stephenson. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features four round-headed arches supported by rusticated voussoirs. The structure includes battered rusticated pilasters and a cornice, along with a parapet that has stone pilasters and coping. At each end, the viaduct has curved retaining walls that are finished with rusticated stone piers. Additionally, to the west of the arches, there is a low elliptical-arched tunnel designed to accommodate a stream.
