Description
The Church of Saint Mary and Saint John is a Catholic church built in 1864, with a spire added in 1880, designed by G. Blount. It features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The building includes a nave with aisles under lean-to roofs, a northwest steeple, and a chancel flanked by gabled chapels.
The tower has setback buttresses and lancet windows, along with paired lancet bell openings and a splayed spire. The west end features a pointed entrance and a spherical triangle window. The six-bay nave has paired lancet windows in the aisles and triple lancet windows in the clerestory. There is one squat buttress on the north side, with confessionals and a vestry located to the south. The canted chancel is supported by clasping buttresses and has a cornice adorned with animal heads, along with windows of two lights.
Inside, there are arches connecting the chapels and chancel to the aisles, supported by corbels in the form of busts, including those of Saints Mary and John, as well as a contemporary bishop and pope. The reredoses in the chapels remain, although the one in the chancel has been removed.
