Description
The South African War Memorial, located on Market Street in Newton-le-Willows, was erected in 1904 to honor those who fought in the South African War and those who died in the World Wars. It is constructed from grey granite, which is partly polished, and features red granite panels. The memorial has a battered base with segmental-headed panels, and the base to the plinth also includes panels. The plinth is adorned with columns at the center of each side that support decorative blocks. A cornice and weathered cap support a stone statue of a soldier from the period. Additionally, flanking segmental-headed panels were added to commemorate the two World Wars.
