Description

Church Cottage, with an attached garden wall, is a house likely built in the early 19th century, which has been altered and extended at the rear. It features a white painted roughcast finish on brick and a slate roof. The building has a two-bay plan positioned at right angles to the street, with a rear outshut under a catslide roof. There is a small set-back wing to the right and a 20th-century extension at the rear of this.

The exterior is a single storey with a two-window range that is almost symmetrical. A gabled porch is slightly off-set to the left and includes a 20th-century door and side window, with one 8/8 sash window on each side. The roof has oversailing eaves and verges, with gable chimneys.

The interior has not been inspected. The attached garden wall is located at the front left corner, enclosing a narrow triangular garden between the street and the churchyard wall. The wall is approximately 1 meter high and is constructed of four courses of large rectangular sandstone blocks topped with half-round coping bricks, featuring a gateway near the house. Church Cottage forms a group with the Church of St Cuthbert.
