Description
Rose Cottage is a detached house with an attached wall surrounding a walled garden, located in the former grounds of Sherborne House. The house dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with a later 19th-century extension, while the wall is from the early 19th century. The house is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with an ashlar facade, topped with a concrete tile roof and ashlar stacks. The wall features coursed squared and dressed limestone on one side and Flemish bond brick on the other.
Rose Cottage has a rectangular plan with a later extension to the left. The facade is symmetrical, two stories high, and has three windows. It features paired 8-pane sash windows set within moulded architraves, and there is a band between the floors. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a hall-light that has geometric glazing bars, topped by a flat hood with a moulded margin supported by moulded stone brackets. The two-story extension to the left includes a two-light stone-mullioned casement in the gable end. The gable ends of the main body have stacks with moulded cappings.
The rear wall of the house forms part of the southern boundary of a large, almost rectangular walled garden measuring approximately 100 meters by 80 meters. The Bothy forms part of the northern boundary, while the eastern boundary includes the rear wall of an open-fronted store. The garden wall reaches up to 5 meters in height and has a flat capping.
