Description
187 and 189 Cambridge Road is a pair of houses, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century. They were enlarged and partly rebuilt in the late 18th century, with alterations and repairs made to No. 189 in 1992. The buildings are constructed of brick, with No. 189 rendered and both facades painted white. They feature thatched roofs, except for the left wing of No. 187, which has a slate roof. The layout is L-shaped, consisting of a single-depth three-unit main range (with No. 189 occupying the second and third units) and a receding wing to the left of No. 187, along with some additions to the rear.
The main range is single-storey and includes one plus three small-paned three-light windows, with the first being a sliding sash and the others casements. The doorway to No. 189 is located between the third and fourth windows and features a board door. There are three small square chimneys: one at each gable and another at the junction.
The left wing of No. 187 is two storeys high, with a very shallow pitched roof. It has a board door to the right, a small two-light sliding sash window to the left, and a slightly larger casement window above. The left return wall, made of unpainted brick, has two restored three-light windows at the ground floor of the rear bay, with sliding sash windows of three and two lights immediately under the eaves, and a side-wall chimney. The rear gable features a small two-light sliding sash window. The interior has not been inspected.
