Description
The Churchtown Conservative Club, originally a national school, was built in 1826 and 1837, as indicated by the inscriptions above former doorways. The building features white-painted roughcast render with painted sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan that runs parallel to the road and is a single-storey structure with a range of five windows, formerly six.
The exterior originally included two doorways, each flanked by two windows. Only the lintels of the doorways remain, with stone tablets inscribed "NATIONAL SCHOOLS / FOR BOYS / 1826" above the left lintel and a similar inscription for girls above the right. Between the center pair of windows, one of which has been altered to create a doorway, is another stone tablet inscribed "NATIONAL SCHOOLS / ENLARGED 1837 / INFANT SCHOOL." The surviving windows, including two in the south gable, consist of three trefoil lights with wooden mullions. All openings and stone tablets feature stone lintels with integral hoodmoulds.
The roof includes a small 20th-century ventilator, and the south gable has an added gabled porch between the windows. The rear of the building has a 20th-century flat-roofed extension. The Churchtown Conservative Club forms a group with the Church of St Cuthbert and related items opposite.
