National School, now club. Dated 1826 and 1837 over former doorways; altered. White-painted roughcast render with painted sandstone dressings, slate roof. Rectangular plan parallel to road. EXTERIOR: single-storey; 5-window range, formerly 6 windows. Elevation originally with 2 doorways each flanked by 2 windows. Of these 2 doorways only the lintels survive, above which are inscribed stone tablets: NATIONAL SCHOOLS / FOR BOYS / 1826 over the left lintel, and a matching inscription for girls over the right-hand lintel. Between the centre pair of windows (the right of which has been altered to form a doorway) is another stone tablet in matching style, inscribed NATIONAL SCHOOLS / ENLARGED 1837 / INFANT SCHOOL. All the surviving windows, including 2 in the south gable, are of 3 trefoil lights with wooden mullions. All the openings and all the stone tablets have stone lintels with integral hoodmoulds. The roof has a small C20 ventilator. The south gable has an added gabled porch between the windows. Rear has C20 flat-roofed extension. INTERIOR: not inspected. Forms group with Church of St Cuthbert and related items opposite (qv).
