Description

The Pembroke Market Emporium, formerly known as the National School, is a single-storey building constructed in the 19th century. It features painted roughcast walls with stucco dressings and a slate roof. The building has a narrow Tudor-style front that leads to a long schoolroom running south.

At the gable end, there is an attic with a shouldered gable, moulded stucco copings, and a stuccoed bellcote, which is likely not original. The bellcote is gabled and slightly projects on three corbels, with a pointed chamfered bell opening that is currently missing its bell. The windows are set in chamfered reveals, with an attic single light and two high-set ground floor windows, all featuring moulded hoodmoulds linked by a string course across the centre. A slate plaque inscribed 'National School 1861' is positioned above the chamfered recess.

The central doorway has a four-centred arch with a chamfered surround and is stopped above a painted tooled limestone plinth. The doorway contains a boarded door fitted with applied cast-iron false hinges. The windows have 2-light glazing with pointed heads, which were renewed in the 20th century, while the attic light has 20th-century plate glass.

On the west side, the wall is rendered on the left, with the remainder constructed of rubble stone, and the windows feature red-brick heads. The lower section is located at the southern end of the building. Inside, there is an entrance lobby leading to a single long room with a three-sided boarded ceiling. The west side has four windows, while the south end contains a blank arch.
