Description

Elm Tree House is a terraced house dating from the 19th century, featuring painted stucco that mimics ashlar stonework, a close-eaved slate roof, and a renewed red brick stack at the right end. The house has three storeys and a cellar, with three bays. The upper floors have hornless 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has wider 16-pane sash windows, all with slate sills. The central arched doorway is adorned with quarter-round edge moulding and a frosted glass fanlight, leading to a later 19th-century four-panel door. The second-floor windows are shorter than those on the first floor, and the ground floor windows are wider than those above. There is a pavement grille to the right, covering a basement opening. The right end wall displays some slate hanging visible in the gable to the right of the stack.

Inside, the entrance hall features six-panel doors and panelled shutters with sunk panels. A small W room includes a wooden plain fireplace surround. The staircase has a bulbous turned bottom newel and a continuous curving rail leading to the top floor, with square balusters and scrolled tread ends. The landing window is fitted with panelled shutters. On the first floor, there are two four-panel fielded-panelled doors and one six-panel door between the front and rear wing. The top floor contains a four-panel fielded-panelled door and several six-panel doors. The rear wing exhibits mid to later 19th-century details, including a ground floor dining room with a square bay on the south side, a plain moulded cornice, a ceiling rose, a fireplace, and a sideboard recess.
