Description
Elm Cottage is a house featuring pebbledash with an unpainted stucco plinth, sill band, and door and window surrounds. It has a slate roof with flat mutules at the eaves, similar to No 3 East Back and Melbourne House/Hamilton House opposite. The building has small renewed red brick end stacks and stands two storeys tall with three bays. It includes twelve-pane hornless sash windows in shouldered later surrounds, complete with slate sills. The central arched doorway is framed by a cement surround with a vermiculated keystone and is accessed by two steps with slate treads. Above the door is a traceried fanlight featuring radiating petal tracery, which sits over a six-panel door that has reeded panels below and raised panels above, with quadrant rebates at the corners, similar to No 3. There are basement vents in the plinth. At the rear, there is a long wing with a 20th-century brick ridge stack and imitation slates, featuring a central 12-pane sash window on the first floor with a brick head. A lean-to is positioned at the angle of the main house.
Inside, the layout includes a centre hall with a six-panel door on each side, with doors that have sunk panels and a central reeded strip. The west room has a 20th-century fireplace, a moulded cornice, and a plain sideboard recess, along with panelled shutters. The rear north room also has a six-panel door. The staircase, located behind the east room, features square balusters, scrolled tread ends, and a rail that is scrolled at the foot.
