Description
Scoles Farm House, which includes an attached outbuilding at the rear and a boundary wall with a gate to the front garden, is a house that originated in the 13th century, with the main structure dating from the early 17th century. It features rubble stone walls and a stone slate roof with coped gables over the porch. The house has ashlar stone stacks, with one at the right end, one to the left of the door, and another closer to the left end. The layout consists of three rooms and a cross-passage, and it is one storey with an attic. The front wall has two large buttresses.
The two-storey gabled porch has a round-headed doorway with a moulded arch, a projecting keystone, and imposts. The inner doorway is also round-headed and features a part-glazed panelled door. Above the doorway, there is a two-light stone mullioned window with a hoodmould, and above this is a circular stone panel with an ornamental border. To the right of the porch, both the ground floor and attic have two casements with glazing bars, with the ground floor window having a hoodmould. To the left of the porch, there is an inserted ledged door and two three-light stone mullioned windows with hoodmoulds and lead lights. The attic includes two hipped dormers with similar windows.
At the rear, there is a single-storey gabled extension built in notching construction, along with a 19th-century lean-to under a catslide roof. Inside, the hall features a large open fireplace with a timber lintel, and there is a stone spiral stair at the rear. Some ceiling beams are exposed and have stop-chamfers.
The attached outbuilding at the rear dates partly from the 13th century and has rubble stone walls and a stone slate roof. It is single storey and features a double lancet window with hoodmoulds and lead lights in the south wall, along with a buttress to the right and a 20th-century glazed door. The west end wall has two tiers of bee boles. This building was under repair at the time of the survey in 1985. The boundary wall to the front garden is made of rubble stone with flat coping, and there are simple iron gates with shaped finials on the uprights.
