Description
Prescott Bridge is a public road bridge that spans the Rufford Branch of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. It was built around 1781 and has been altered since its construction. The resident engineer for the project was Richard Owen, and it was commissioned by the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company. The bridge is made of coursed squared sandstone, although the parapets have been rebuilt in concrete. It features a semi-elliptical arch with plain voussoirs, a plain arch-band, and plain terminal piers. On the west side, there are large rectangular metal tie-plates, and on the north side, there is an oval number plate marked "5." The deck of the bridge is humped and cobbled, with remnants of 20th-century asphalt on top. Prescott Bridge is part of a group that includes Baldwin's Lock and Bridge approximately 500 meters to the south, and German's Lock and Bridge about 400 meters further south.
