Description
German's Lock and Bridge, located on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, is a canal lock and associated accommodation bridge on the Rufford Branch, built around 1781 and altered later. The resident engineer was Richard Owen, and it was constructed for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company. The structure features large dressed sandstone blocks, wooden gates, and small cast-iron mooring bollards on both sides, with an overflow channel on the west side. The bridge over the north entrance has a stilted basket-arch made of punch-dressed rusticated voussoirs, a dressed band, and a parapet of massive blocks with rounded coping. It includes plain terminal piers and steps down at the west end, with an oval number plate "3" on the north side. The lock and bridge are situated on the boundary between Burscough and Lathom.
