Description
Hurst Cottage is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from around 1700, which has been enlarged and altered. It is constructed of handmade red brick and has a slate roof. The building has a single-depth, two-unit plan, with a former shippon on the left end and a 20th-century addition at the rear. It stands two low storeys high and features a 1:2 window arrangement. The main section has a low stone plinth and a two-course band, with a gabled porch at the right-hand end that includes a round-headed doorway. There are two segmental-headed three-light casements on the ground floor and two two-light casements above. The left portion has a three-light casement on each floor, offset to the right and left respectively.
Inside the porch, there is a heavy board door with strap hinges. In the former hall or housepart at the south end, there are two 18th-century beams with run-out chamfers. The next bay, which previously contained two service rooms, has had its partition removed and a second doorway blocked. In the former shippon at the north end, there are two beams similar to those in the housepart and large scarf-jointed purlins at the first floor. Hurst Cottage forms a group with a barn located approximately 5 meters to the north.
