Description
Thatch Cottage is a farmhouse, now a house, likely dating from the late 17th century. It has been remodeled and recently enlarged. The structure features a cruck frame with later brick cladding that is now rendered and painted white, topped by a restored thatched roof. The building consists of four bays, with the first bay previously used as a shippon. It is one-and-a-half storeys high, and all openings have been altered. The original doorway, which was located at the junction of the third and fourth bays in line with the chimney, has been moved to the second bay. 20th-century windows have been inserted, and the chimney has been removed. The renewed thatched roof has prominent oversailing eaves and two large dormers, replacing the former roof that had eaves almost flush with the walls and very low small windows just under the eaves. A two-storey wing was recently added to the rear.
Inside, there are remains of three cruck trusses: one at the junction of the first and second bays, with blades terminating above a collar and a kingpost mounted on this, along with strongly curved windbraces; a similar truss at the gable end of the fourth bay, also featuring a kingpost mounted on a collar and one similar windbrace; and the front blade of another truss at the junction of the second and third bays, with a similar kingpost and windbraces on both sides.
