Description
This barn, dating from around 1700, is located approximately 30 metres north of Higher Barn Farmhouse. It is constructed from red sandstone and sandstone rubble, topped with a slate roof. The barn features six bays, with a contemporary outshut at the rear of the first two bays and a later outshut at the front of the last two bays. There are opposed wagon doorways in the fourth bay, although the rear doorway is blocked.
The building is wide, with a relatively shallow pitched roof and low eaves, and it is lofted at both ends. It has a chamfered plinth and a drip course at the first floor level. Both gables have a first-floor door with a hoodmould, an owl hole in the apex, and stone copings with kneelers. The left gable features three ground floor doors. The rear wall is now hidden by added buildings.
Inside, the barn has roof trusses that include tie beams, raking struts, and a collar. There are former ventilation slits on four levels, all but the uppermost of which are blocked. The barn displays an unusually elaborate treatment, particularly at the gables, and is likely associated with the former Fleetwood Hall.
