Description
Maudsley Fold is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century or earlier, which was altered in 1900 and is now used as a house. It features an internal cruck frame with walls made of stone and brick, all painted white except for the west gable. The roof is made of graded slate and has one chimney on the ridge and another at the right gable. The building has a four-bay linear plan and a gable facing the road. It is one and a half storeys tall, with the front wall rebuilt in brick. The left gable includes a 2-light attic window, while the right gable, constructed of coursed red sandstone with large quoins, has a modern external chimney and an attic window. The rear of the building has gabled dormers on the second and third bays, four small casement windows at ground level, and a very small oblong window between the third and fourth bays. Inside, there are full cruck trusses between the second and third bays, and between the third and fourth bays, with the latter featuring a tie beam and a collar that has been severed to create a doorway, along with some wind braces. The partition between the first and second bays is a thick battered stone wall, and there is a secondary upper truss located a short distance from the inner side. Historically, a coin hoard was discovered in the chimney during renovations in 1900, containing coins that date from the reign of Edward VI to Charles I, with the latest coin dating to 1645.
