Description
Darwen Side Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1619, with later enlargements in the 18th century and around 1900. It is constructed of stone and has a slate roof, featuring an L-shaped plan with a rear extension. The building has two storeys and four bays. The first bay contains a stable door, while the third bay has the main house door. All openings, except for the first, are chamfered and have hoodmoulds, and the windows are sashed. The fourth bay at ground floor has better masonry, indicating it was originally a four-light window, although it has been heightened in the 18th century. This section now appears uniform with the even taller left end, which dates from the late 19th century. A datestone is located at the right end at first floor level, inscribed in relief with "E T 1619" and a rampant beast, possibly a lion, between the letters. The right-hand return wall features an original two-light double chamfered stone mullion window. The rear wing, made of masonry similar to the fourth bay, has two 18th-century chamfered stone mullion windows.
