Description
Black Brook House is a house that has been built in several periods, primarily in the 18th century or early 19th century. It features pink washed stucco on stone, and possibly some brick, with a hipped slate roof that has one ridge chimney and two additional chimneys. The building has a roughly F-shaped plan, with older farm buildings forming a receding wing on the left side.
The house is two storeys high and has a long north-facing front that is slightly angled at the junction of the building, creating a range of five windows. The entrance is located in the fourth bay and is flanked by single-light windows with glazing bars. It features an open-pedimented doorcase supported by Tuscan columns with entablatures, and a semi-circular fanlight with intersecting glazing bars. To the left of the door, there is a later rectangular bay window, while the rest of the windows on both floors are boxed sash windows with glazing bars.
At the west end, which was formerly the entrance front, there are three similar windows on the first floor, and two very tall boxed sash windows with glazing bars flanking a French window that opens onto a rectangular stone balustraded terrace. The rear of the house has a gabled extension with a modern semi-circular ground floor bay and three sashed windows. Many of the sashed windows contain crown glass.
Inside, there is an open well staircase of early 19th century design, featuring scrolled brackets, stick balusters, and a handrail that ends in a scroll.
