SD 52NE WALTON-LE-DALE SHUTTLING FIELDS LANE

5/132 Higher Shuttling Fields Farmhouse Sept. 1960 - II

Farmhouse, said to be c. 1660. Brick, with stone plinth, large stone quoins, stone mullion windows, slate roof, one modern brick chimney rising from the eaves. Cruciform plan by extensions on each side of rectangular house. 2½ storeys, low 2-storey service wing on south side, 1½ storey porch on north side. No obvious front, present front door being in service wing adjoining west gable end, with a monopitched roof over it; gable walls have one double-chamfered stone mullion window on each floor including the attic; at the west end 6, 6 and 3 lights, and at the east end 6, 8 and 3 lights, all except those at ground floor having hoodmoulds; at east end ground floor there is also a square top-hung casement with glazing bars, which is a fire-window. Gabled porch on north side has modern side door, a large stepped stone buttress and one stone mullion window on each floor; similar 2-light window, blocked, at 1st floor next to the porch. Interior: unusual 2-bay plan with fireplace and staircase at corners of south side wall; ovolo-moulded beams on both floors; inglenook with ovolo-moulded bressumer; dogleg staircase and straight attic stair, the well at the top surrounded by unusual eared splat balusters; timber-framed 1st floor partitions.
