Description

Higher Shuttling Fields Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1660. It is built of brick with a stone plinth, large stone quoins, and stone mullion windows, topped with a slate roof and featuring a modern brick chimney that rises from the eaves. The farmhouse has a cruciform plan due to extensions on each side of the rectangular main structure. It stands 2½ storeys tall, with a low 2-storey service wing on the south side and a 1½ storey porch on the north side.

There is no obvious front entrance; the current front door is located in the service wing adjoining the west gable end, which has a monopitched roof. The gable walls feature one double-chamfered stone mullion window on each floor, including the attic. The west end has windows with 6, 6, and 3 lights, while the east end has 6, 8, and 3 lights, all except those on the ground floor having hoodmoulds. On the east end, the ground floor also includes a square top-hung casement with glazing bars, serving as a fire-window.

The gabled porch on the north side has a modern side door, a large stepped stone buttress, and one stone mullion window on each floor, with a similar 2-light window that is blocked at the first floor next to the porch. Inside, the farmhouse features an unusual 2-bay plan with a fireplace and staircase at the corners of the south side wall. It has ovolo-moulded beams on both floors, an inglenook with an ovolo-moulded bressumer, a dogleg staircase, and a straight attic stair, with the well at the top surrounded by unusual eared splat balusters. The first floor has timber-framed partitions.
