Description
Cuerdale Hall is a farmhouse, now divided into two dwellings, built around 1700, with possible earlier elements. The building has undergone significant alterations and extensions over the years. It is constructed of brick and stone with slate roofs and has a roughly T-shaped plan. The west range contains evidence of the original structure and is made of brick with stone quoins, rendered except for the east wall, which features two buttresses on the ground floor. This wall also has a large stone doorcase on the west face of a gabled extension, which is now blocked by an internal chimney stack. The east range is primarily rendered brick, except for the south wall, which is made of coursed stone and has various 19th and 20th-century windows. Some windows in other walls are sash windows with glazing bars, including six on the north side and two on the west side.
Inside, there are a pair of very large bridging beams with quarter-round moulding in the housepart of the west range, as well as two dogleg staircases—one featuring splat balusters and the other now boxed in. There is also panelled wainscot with plain rails and fielded panels in one small upper room. Cuerdale Hall was once the residence of the Assheton family of Downham and Cuerdale.
