Description
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John Southworth and its attached presbytery were built in 1818. The structure features rubble with stone quoins and dressings, topped by a hipped slate roof at the west end, which covers the presbytery. The chapel has a rectangular plan, with an entrance at the east end that includes a round-headed doorway framed by stone jambs. Above the doorway is a stone tablet inscribed with the words: "HOLINESS BESEEMETH THY HOUSE O LORD AT ALL TIMES. PS. 92 1818."
On each side of the chapel, there are four stilted lunettes with radiating glazing bars, and two additional windows in the east gable, which are currently blocked. The presbytery is two stories tall and has three symmetrical bays, with a facade finished in scored stucco. It features a moulded stone doorcase with a semi-circular fan light, and a modern glazed porch has been added. All windows in the presbytery are sash with glazing bars. The hipped roof includes a chimney on the hip, another on the ridge behind, and a belfry at the apex.
Inside the chapel, the space is simply designed with a flat ceiling. There is an east gallery supported by two iron columns. The rear wall behind the altar has a large framing recess with a wide depressed arch flanked by Ionic columns, which support a dentilled cornice and frieze inscribed with "ECCE PANIS ANGELORUM." The altar is surrounded by a curved communion rail with stick balusters.
