Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St John with presbytery, built around 1815-1819 and altered since, is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, with the south facade rendered, a sandstone plinth, and a slate roof. It has an L-plan layout, with the church forming a receding wing to the presbytery. The building is two storeys high with an attic, featuring a 2+2 window arrangement on the south facade that makes the church appear as part of the house. The presbytery has a round-headed doorway slightly off-center and two windows on each floor, all sashed without glazing bars. The church continues to the right with two blind windows on each floor, all having raised sills and plain reveals.

The main entrance front is on the north side, where the church appears as a plain wing with a large round-headed window on the re-entrant side, a small early 20th-century tower-cum-porch at the north gable, and three round-headed windows in the east side wall. The presbytery features a small 20th-century lean-to porch in the center, a round-headed stair-window above with radiating glazing bars, and two 16-pane unhorned sashed windows on each floor, also with raised sills and wedge lintels, along with a single-storey extension at the west end.

Inside, the church includes a north gallery supported by two cast-iron columns, a round-headed sanctuary arch, a coved oval ceiling in the sanctuary, and a tetrastyle Corinthian reredos with giant semi-columns. The church forms a group with Burscough Hall Farmhouse located approximately 20 meters to the west.
