Description

The Church of St. John is an Anglican parish church built between 1896 and 1897 by architect C. E. Ponting. It is constructed from rock-faced rubble stone and features a red plain tile roof, designed in a Free Perpendicular Gothic style. The church has a single overall roof but is cross-gabled at the west tower, which includes a shingled spirelet. The gables are tile-hung and have timber louvres.

At the west end, there are two large buttresses framing a broad four-light window. The southwest porch is positioned at an angle to the nave and has a coped gable supported by ashlar angle piers. The nave consists of four flat-headed two-light windows and is framed by substantial ashlar gabled buttresses. The southwest buttress supports an octagonal stack, while the southeast buttress features a statue niche and crockets on its gable. The buttresses on the north side are simpler and tiled, with stepped ashlar center buttresses on each side.

The chancel is narrower with taller walls, containing two deep-set single lights with moulded arches on the south side and one on the north, along with a lean-to vestry. The east end has gabled buttresses and a broad five-light east window with an ogee hood, set high with ashlar walling on each side. The foundation stone is dated 1896.

Inside, the church features a timber wagon roof, a high timber screen, and an east window designed by Morris & Co in 1913.
