Description

Big Thatch is a house dating back to the 17th century, with later 20th-century additions. It is constructed of rubble stone and has a thatched roof with coped gables and East end and ridge stacks. The house has one and a half storeys. The front of the house features three stone-tiled gables, with the left gable being a 20th-century addition. The original part of the house has ovolo-moulded recessed mullion windows with hoodmoulds; these are two-light to each gable, with a three-light and two-light window framing a gabled porch which contains a reset oak plank door. The left gable side has a thatched dormer, a gable with a two-light window, and two ground floor mullion windows, all dating to the 20th century. Older photographs indicate a small eaves dormer previously occupied the position of the left gable. The rear of the house has five thatched dormers added in the 20th century. Inside, the left side of the cross passage features a large timber lintel fireplace, and there’s a timber lintel fireplace at the north end of the house.
