Description
This is an early to mid-18th century farmhouse, now a house, located in Hatherleigh, with alterations made since its original construction. It is built of handmade red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring a sandstone plinth and a stone slate roof, with slate to the rear. The house has a double-depth, double-fronted plan and a later extension on the left side, possibly originally a stable or granary. It is two storeys with an attic, and originally had a nearly symmetrical facade, but the doorway is now offset to the left of centre, with a studded board door and plain overlight, sheltered by a 20th-century pitched canopy. To the right of the doorway is a late 19th-century canted bay window, and to the left is a segmental-headed four-pane sash window. Similar four-pane sash windows are located at the first floor, all featuring what appear to be false shutters. The extension to the left is lower and has a large segmental-headed tripartite sash window on the ground floor and a four-pane sash window above, both with false shutters. The right-hand gable wall includes a four-pane sash and a cross-window casement on each floor, along with a two-light attic window. The interior features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a dog-legged staircase leading to the attic, fielded panel doors on the first floor, and a scarf-jointed purlin roof.
