Description
Briars Brook Culvert is a canal culvert built around 1771 that carries the Leeds-Liverpool Canal over Eller Brook. It was designed by resident engineer John Longbotham for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company. The structure is made of coursed sandstone rubble and features a segmental arch with plain voussoirs, a plain band, and a parapet that is finished with a single course of large blocks and a rounded coping. On the west side, there is a curved and sloped abutment, with the coping extending down from the band. This culvert is part of one of the earliest trunk canals in the country.
