Description

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal Top Locks, specifically the lower lock located in Lathom, was built in 1781 under the guidance of resident engineer Richard Owen for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company. This canal lock features large dressed sandstone blocks and wooden gates. A wooden footbridge spans the lower entrance, which has convex curved cheeks. There is also an overflow channel on the west side. This structure is part of a group of canal features at Top Locks and is situated on the boundary between Burscough and Lathom.
