Description
Square House is a house that likely dates from around 1800, with extensions added between 1830 and 1840, plus a later addition at the rear. It is constructed from handmade brown brick in Flemish bond and features a stone slate roof, along with coursed squared sandstone and a slate roof. The house has a double-depth plan with a back extension and stands two storeys high, displaying a total of five windows arranged as 3+2. There is a vertical joint between the two sections, and a continuous moulded gutter cornice runs along the top.
The left portion, which has three windows, includes a doorway in the third bay that features a glazed and panelled door, protected by a prominent flat canopy supported by large shaped brackets. This doorway is flanked by narrow side windows with raised sills and wedge lintels. The unhorned sashed windows, all with 16 panes except for the central ones which have 12 panes, also have raised sills and wedge lintels. The right portion has two windows and is distinguished by raised rusticated quoins at the outer corner, along with similar 16-pane sashed windows. A ridge chimney is located at the junction of the two sections, with additional gable chimneys present. The interior of the house has been remodelled.
