Description

The barn at Trewyn Farm is a Grade II* listed structure, primarily constructed from roughly squared and coursed red sandstone rubble, topped with a corrugated sheet steel roof. While its exterior appears to date from the late 17th century, the barn itself is older. The south elevation features a central cart entrance, with a section to the left that was originally timber framed above a low wall, typical for the area; however, the left end of this wall has been demolished to create a large opening. Between the cart entrance and this opening, a section of timber framing with woven split oak infill is still visible behind the metal sheeting. To the right of the cart entrance, there is a full-height stone wall that includes a small doorway and two vertical slit vents above. This section was extended by an additional bay in the late 17th century. The east gable and most of the rear wall are made of stone and feature slit vents, while a small part of this wall is timber framed and boarded. The apex of the west gable is open.

Inside, the barn reveals that the west end is the original structure, consisting of three bays that likely had a central entrance. It contains four raised cruck trusses, one of which is integrated into the west gable. The end trusses have collars and ties, while the original east gable features queen posts with collars only on the central trusses. The barn has two tiers of trenched purlins and a ridge piece. The walls were raised, and the roof was given a lower pitch when the barn was extended by one bay in stone at the south end at the end of the 17th century. The wall plates, framing, and most of the secondary rafters from this period remain intact.
