Description

SD 82 NE BACUP BURNLEY ROAD

3/23 Nos. 219, 221, 223 - GV II

Row of 3 cottages, in 2 builds, later C18. Watershot coursed sandstone, stone slate roof with 2 chimneys on the ridge and one at the right gable. Each cottage one bay. Vertical joint between Nos. 221 and 223. All 2 storeys, door on left, one window at ground floor and 2 above, but otherwise differing slightly: Nos. 219 and 221 have stepped triple- light windows at ground floor only, top-hung casements in original vertical openings above, and No. 219 is wider with a small door at the right end; No. 223 has a lower and wider stepped triple-light window at ground floor and similar windows with narrower lights above. (Similar but altered cottages are set back at the left end, and No. 217 (q.v.) continues at a slightly receding angle and lower level at the right). Interiors all originally one room deep; No. 223 has vaulted cellar down deep flight of spiral steps; end walls slightly angled indicating that this row was later insertion.
