Description
Major House, located at No 12 on Church Street, is an 18th-century building. It stands two storeys high and is finished in stucco, featuring modillions at the eaves and three gabled carved 19th-century dormers with two lights each. The building has a plinth and three windows on each storey. Most windows are plain, except for one on the right, which is a two-light 19th-century window without glazing bars. All windows have stone surrounds. The entrance door is adorned with an open pediment and a semi-circular fanlight with plain glass, and the door itself consists of six fielded panels. Major House is part of a group that includes the Andrew Carnegie Public Library, the Town Hall, the premises occupied by the Tourist Information Office, No 4, and Church Court, along with Nos 6 to 12 (even).
