Description
21 Church Street is an 18th-century, two-storey building with a rough cast exterior. The central doorway features a cornice adorned with dentils and a frieze supported by engaged Ionic columns. On the ground floor, there are two three-light windows that are set back, each topped with a cornice where the forward moulding is flush with the stucco surface. The central light of these windows is wider, and currently, glazing bars are only present in the upper halves. Brackets are positioned at the tops of the jambs and mullions.
The upper storey has three single-light windows, each with well-crafted moulded architraves and glazing bars. The central window is distinguished by a cornice with dentils supported by brackets, and there is a plain string at the cill level. At the eaves, a cornice is present, featuring a central pediment on brackets; the lower mouldings of the eaves cornice extend as a string across the pediment. Within the tympanum, there is a rectangular panel that contains an oval moulded frame displaying the initials and date "1808 D J P," embellished with a doubled swag above. The front corners of the house are topped with urn finials. This building is part of a group with the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene, alongside Nos 1 to 23, with Nos 7 to 13 being of local interest only.
