Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St Peter and St Paul, along with its attached presbytery, was built between 1830 and 1831. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with a slate roof featuring red ridging tiles. The building has a T-plan layout, consisting of a 3-bay church and a 4-bay house at the south end.

The church displays rusticated quoins and buttresses with offsets. The entrance is located at the northeast gable end, which features an added single-storey gabled porch in Gothic style. This porch has two small vertical rectangular windows with plain architraves and square hoodmoulds, each containing two lights with diamond lattice glazing and intersecting tracery above. A plain band creates the appearance of a pedimented gable, topped with a gable bellcote. The side walls of the church have three bays, each containing one larger window similar to those in the gable.

Inside, the church has a flat ceiling and a small sanctuary formed by multiple diminishing chamfered arches. The presbytery is double-depth with four bays and two storeys, featuring rusticated quoins and a hipped slate roof. It includes a glazed porch at the third bay that covers a recessed panelled door with a moulded surround and rectangular fanlight, as well as 12-pane sashed windows with plain surrounds. The interior of the presbytery has not been inspected.
