Description

City Cottage is a 17th-century cottage, altered over time. It has a high stone plinth and walls built with a post-and-rail framing system, featuring straight arch-braces connecting to the wallplate. The roof is covered with stone slates, and there is a brick chimney at the right gable. The cottage is two bays wide with a 1½-story height. The entrance is through a modern addition on the left side. Two fixed, three-light windows are located below the wall rail, one in each bay, and a dormer window has been inserted into the second bay. The rear elevation is similar, although altered with small windows added below the rail in each panel. The rear wall bracing originates only from the centre post. A doorway with a nicked lintel is centrally positioned on the rear.

Inside, the cottage has a complete timber-frame construction. A lateral partition wall contains two doorways, one altered and the other blocked beneath a cambered lintel. A similar longitudinal partition divides the first bay. The interior also includes chamfered beams and, at the first floor, two close-together timber-framed partitions, each with original doorways. The roof structure is windbraced.
