Description
The entrance steps to Mawdesley Hall, dated 1653, feature an integral viewing platform on an open-topped turret. They are located on a steep bank that separates the garden above from the road below. The steps rise from the east, running parallel to the garden's retaining wall, and lead to the open side of an enclosed platform atop a short turret that projects from the bank. Constructed from sandstone, the flight consists of 8 steps, which are protected on the outer side by a sloped parapet with roll-moulded coping. This coping extends around the viewing platform and includes looplights in the sides. It is said that the structure incorporates a stone bearing the initials of Robert Mawdesley along with the date 1653, although this stone has become heavily overgrown as of 1985.
