Description
Barrett's House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1695, located on Mawdesley Back Lane East. The building features mostly handmade brick on a stone plinth, with a crosswing made of sandstone rubble, all accented by stone quoins. It has a stone slate roof with projected eaves, although part of the rear is felted. The layout is almost H-shaped, consisting of a 2-bay main range with a projected wing on the second bay and a 2-bay crosswing at the left end. The farmhouse is two storeys high.
The centre of the main range has a dogtoothed band at the first floor, a door at the left end, and a vertical rectangular 2-light sliding sash window on each floor, with the lower window featuring a gauged brick head. The gable of the right wing has a similar window on each floor, each with a short band above. Above the upper window, there is a square datestone inscribed with the initials T T in relief. The re-entrant area has a first-floor window like the others, and the 1695 wall features an extruded brick chimney stack. The gable of the left wing has a sliding sash window on each floor, with three lights below and two lights above. There is a ridge chimney on each part of the building.
The rear of the farmhouse has been altered, with an added lean-to in the angle, but it retains a low 3-light sliding sash window at the first floor. Inside, there is a very thick junction wall to the left wing, and the beams on both floors of the main range have stopped quarter-round moulding, while one beam in the crosswing is ovolo-moulded.
