Description

The gate piers and railings at Wigan Lodge to Duxbury Park, likely dating from the early 19th century, feature stone construction with iron gates and railings that enclose the approach bay. There are six large square stone pillars with fluted sides and plain stepped capitals, topped with distinctive finials that are two-thirds cylindrical in shape, fluted at the top, and adorned with moulded circular features. Each side of the gate has a pair of these pillars, with one at each end of the railings. The low iron gates are designed with horizontally-compressed criss-cross bars, Greek Key patterns along the edges, and ramped top rails. These gates are hung on matching iron posts, one of which has an urn finial, and are connected by short railings to the inner side of each pair of stone piers. The boundary railings, featuring fleur-de-lys heads, extend in gentle arcs for approximately 30 meters on either side to meet the road.
