Description
The Former Victoria Hotel is a building dating from 1894, designed by Heaton, Ralph and Heaton, and has undergone alterations. It features painted stucco on brick with painted stone dressings and a slate roof that is concealed by a brick parapet. The building has a wide U-plan, with a double-depth front range that runs parallel to the street and back extensions.
The exterior consists of three storeys over cellars and has an eight-window range that was formerly symmetrical. The ground floor has channelled rustication, while the upper floors feature super-imposed pilasters (coupled at the outer bays and single at the third and sixth bays) and broad bands between the floors. The building is topped with a dentilled cornice and a rebuilt brick parapet.
The third bay includes a Tuscan porch with a dentilled cornice and a balustraded parapet with ball finials, which protects an elliptical-headed doorway with a pilastered surround and panelled double doors. The sixth bay has a window that replaced a former doorway, which was likely similar to the first. There are tripartite windows flanking this former doorway, while all other windows are sashed without glazing bars. The ground floor windows have stained glass in the upper sections and all windows feature emphatic moulded architraves with scrolled feet and dentilled cornices, vertically linked by panels of curvilinear patterning in the bands. The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a group with the adjoining buildings at numbers 54 and 56.
