Description

The Swan and Railway Hotel is a public house that was originally built as a hotel in 1898 by WEV Crompton. It features red brick in Flemish bond with matching terracotta dressings, including square tiling on the ground floor, and has a green slate roof. The building has a narrow rectangular plan that is positioned at right angles to the street and is designed in the Scottish baronial style.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a two-window facade. It has two semi-circular oriels on the upper floors, a modillioned cornice, and coupled attic gables. The ground floor has a wide square-headed doorway offset to the left, flanked by 2-light windows. To the right of the main entrance is a narrower doorway, with all these openings featuring moulded eared surrounds and large overlights with stained glass. The upper floors are adorned with 5-light mullioned windows, with three lights in the oriels, and the first floor windows are transomed. The gables have pairs of round-headed lancets separated by Art Nouveau shafts that rise to apex finials. The windows are fitted with small-paned glazing.

Inside, there are original features such as a mosaic floor in the porch that is lettered "Swan & Railway," and the entrance passage and rear hall are decorated with foliated glazed wall-tiles. To the left of the entrance passage is a lounge, while to the right is a servery leading to the bar vault. Both rooms feature panelled and stained glass screens, as well as original settle seating.
