Description

The Clarence Hotel is a public house built in 1898 by WEV Crompton, with slight alterations. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring matching terracotta dressings and a slate roof that is concealed by a parapet. The building has a double-depth, double-fronted plan with a projecting central porch and a long back extension that follows the curve of the plot. It is designed in the Artisan Mannerist style.

The exterior consists of three storeys and three bays, arranged symmetrically with the central bay projected. The ground floor features a cornice that wraps around, plain terracotta sill and head bands on the upper floors, and a prominent modillioned cornice with egg-and-dart detailing topped by a balustraded parapet. The full-height central projection includes an open porch at ground level supported by two pairs of polished granite Tuscan columns, which hold up a prominent segmental canopy. The doorway has a moulded surround and panelled double doors. Above this, there is a mullion-and-transom window on the first floor with an arched centre light in a Venetian style, topped by a wide foliated terracotta panel with the raised lettering "CLARENCE / HOTEL" painted in gold, along with a large pendant lamp bracket. The second floor features a four-light mullioned window. The flanking bays have two-light windows at ground level with pilaster mullions and moulded architraves, cross-windows on the first floor, and two-light windows on the second floor.

The interior has not been inspected. The building serves as a striking "end-stop" to King Street when viewed from that direction.
