Public house. 1898. By WEV Crompton; slightly altered. Red brick in Flemish bond with matching terracotta dressings, slate roof concealed by parapet. Double-depth double-fronted plan with projecting central porch and long back extension following curved plot. Artisan Mannerist style. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and 3 bays, symmetrical, the centre projected; with a cornice to ground floor carried round, plain terracotta sill-and head-bands to the upper floors, prominent modillioned cornice with egg-and-dart enrichment and balustraded parapet. The full-height projected centre has an open porch at ground floor with 2 pairs of polished granite Tuscan columns carrying a prominent segmental canopy, and a doorway with moulded surround and panelled double doors; a mullion-and-transom window at 1st floor with arched centre light (Venetian style), a wide foliated terracotta panel over this with raised lettering "CLARENCE / HOTEL" painted gold, and a large pendant lamp bracket; and a 4-light mullioned window at 2nd floor. The flanking bays have 2-light windows at ground floor with pilaster mullions and moulded architraves, cross-windows at 1st floor, and 2-light windows at 2nd floor. INTERIOR not inspected. Forms a striking "end-stop" to King Street when viewed from that direction.
