Description

The Former National Westminster Bank, now a nightclub, was built in 1866 and features later additions at the rear. It was designed by Walters, Barker and Ellis of Manchester. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and has a hipped slate roof, situated on a corner site with a rectangular plan. It showcases a classical style with Italianate elements.

The exterior consists of two storeys with four-window facades facing Wallgate and King Street. The ground floor has a hammer-dressed plinth and a continuous channelled apron beneath the windows. There is a frieze with bead-and-reel decoration and a prominent moulded cornice that also serves as a sill-band for the first floor. The first floor has a plain frieze and a notable bracketed and dentilled cornice that supports a blocking course with upstands on the Wallgate facade.

On the ground floor of the Wallgate facade, there is a large round-headed doorway to the left, featuring double doors and a plain fanlight within an eared architrave adorned with carved details and a straight moulded cornice. This is flanked by three large segmental-headed sash windows, each with eared architraves and console keystones. The first floor has smaller windows that echo the design of those below but with simpler architraves.

The left return facing King Street has matching fenestration and includes a pair of side-wall chimneys. Beyond this, there is a set-back two-window addition that features a tall doorway and a large tripartite window on the ground floor, with a balcony above the larger first-floor window. Attached to the left of this addition is a short single-storey extension with a large doorway.

The interior has not been inspected.
